The 1978 Trans Am had three different exhaust systems depending on performance and the engine it was equipped with.  The  cars equipped with the W-72 package and the base package 400 got a  2″ Y – pipe coming off the passenger and driver exhaust manifolds  before it enters into a 2 1/2″ pipe and finally connected to a catalytic converter, a single 2 1/4″  over the axle pipe got the exhaust gases back to the muffler on the base package and the W-72 system used a y-pipe to split the exhaust gases into two separate resonators and tail pipes.  The exhaust gases exited out of the tail pipes in maybe the most recognizable chrome splitters of all time to top off the exhaust system. Our base package 400 exhaust system comes with the correct y-pipe with correct front flanges and correct rear flange welded on.  We have chosen to provide a test pipe in replace of the cat simply because a correct cat is no longer available, and most customers want to eliminate it. Our tail pipes are the correct 2 1/4″ tail pipes with exact correct bracket welded on. When these cars came from the factory the chrome splitters were welded on.  We have seen the splitters at different angles on our original pipes and therefore have decided to allow our customers to weld the tip at the degrees of their choice with a nice tight slip fit aiding them through the process.

Our W-72 package systems come with the correct y-pipe with correct flanges, test pipe to eliminate the catyletic converter, correct y-pipe with correct flat for parking brake cable correct resonators and correct tail pipes with exact correct brackets welded on, and correct reproduction chrome splitters. All our systems come with the correct GM style clamps and attaching hardware as well as installation instructions and sealant.  Muffler hangers tail hangers and studs and nuts are available upon request.

The third exhaust system used on the Trans Ams equipped with the 403 motor. This system consisted of a 2 1/4″ cross over pipe that went from the left side exhaust manifold over to the right and from there a 2 1/2″ exhaust pipe led straight back to the catylectic converter. After the cat the exhaust system was the exact same as the W-72 package making use of a y-pipe leading into two resonators and exacting out with two tailpipes ending in you guessed it, those classic style chrome splitters. Our 403 exhaust system comes complete with he correct front pipe with wrinkles, correct cross over pipe, all the correct flanges, correct test pipe and y pipe as well as correct resonators, tail pipes and chrome tips as well as correct GM style clamps and attaching hardware, installation instructions and sealant. Muffler hangers tail hangers and studs and nuts are available upon request.
